THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM THIS MORNING TO 6 PM EDT MONDAY FOR SOUTHERN VERMONT...THE BERKSHIRES AND THE TACONICS.

A SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM IS EXPECTED TO IMPACT PORTIONS OF EASTERN NEW YORK AND WESTERN NEW ENGLAND FROM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY WITH 4 TO 8 INCHES OR MORE OF SNOWFALL ACCUMULATION POSSIBLE IN THE ADVISORY AREA. THE HEAVIEST SNOW IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 1500 FEET. THE PRECIPITATION WILL MIX WITH RAIN IN THE VALLEYS WHICH WILL LIMIT SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS.

IN ADDITION TO THE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY SNOW...STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS MAY DOWN TREE LIMBS AND POWER LINES. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN WITH THE WIND DIRECTION SHIFTING FROM SOUTHEAST SUNDAY MORNING TO EAST SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND THEN NORTHERLY SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY. SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS OVER 40 MPH ARE POSSIBLE. EAST AND NORTHEAST FACING SLOPES OF MOUNTAINS WILL BE ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE.

Viacom vs Google/You Tube

Viacom has initiated a legal case with Google over copyright infringement from videos posted. This is a landmark case in terms of information, technology capabilities, copyright, business models etc.

Please listen to one of the 45 minute programs on NPR about it, research the issues some and come to class ready to discuss. This will make up for some of the time we lost with the online class.

Online Class or Technological Disaster Management

So how does one create Plan B, Plan C..........Plan Z when it comes to technology and its implementation. I think what happened today with the online class is a good example of a combination of things that can go wrong in a technology environment and worthy of exploring.

There were several issues that contributed to the thwarted online class today integrating new technology: Power failure, computer problems, phone issues and human error. Though not necessarily in this order, let's take them one by one.

1. Power failure - not a lot one can do about this so just be aware of its possibility and trouble shooting in its aftermath.

2. Computer problems - in trying to override taking the time to reboot from a previous problem earlier in the day my dear computer crashed - some ways this can be avoided - system clean ups are a recommended course of action on a regular basis - though the crash was an unexpected occurence stemming from #1.

3. Phone issues - related to #1 too.

4. Human error - after reviewing the WebEx protocol I realized that in trying to correct the system freezing, I inadvertenly knocked us out of the virtual space not once but twice...

At the end of the day, I continually realize that like other relationship, the one with technology has its ups and downs and above all a challenging but satisfying learning curve.

We will try it again with greater success I'm sure. If you are ready to try again, let's look at dates to reschedule this online experience once again - when we are in class together on March 26.

Management of Information Technology examines the impact and the enabling role of information and communication technologies (IT) in transforming organizational, work group, and individual processes. Topics include: identifying and using specific enabling IT and communication applications, gaining efficiencies and competitive advantage, and leading the process of IT-induced change process.

The class will meet on site Monday afternoons: 1:30 – 5:15 pm @ SIT at Media Lab

Classes will be held February 26, March 5, 12 (online class) & 26, April 9, 16, 23 & 30
